Advice on children’s participation

Roma children and refugee children, who are members of  School Parliaments are active DX club members – the opinions of these marginalised groups of children are always included in workshops before specific meetings of children from the DX club with representatives from different institutions.

By including children form School Parliaments in its activities, we enable children from different minority groups to reach the DX club and its activities. We have three local schools in our projects and we have an agreement with schools to include specific groups of children for School Parliaments by taking into account gender, disabilities, origin. This improves visibility and participation of different target groups in decision making within School Parliaments, and enables us to reach those children as participants in our activities.

    What do we do?

Children’s Information and Cultural Centre – DX Club, founded in 1997 as part of the Child Rights Centre, gathers children and youth 12-18 years old. Children who are members of the club are actively involved in the implementation of all Child Right Centre's  (CRC) project activities. Beside the workshops, trainings and meetings prepared with and for them, they are also supported by other professionals to develop specific advocacy skills in field of child rights, in order to become child rights defenders and peer educators. What changes did you achieve?

Child Rights Centre makes children's opinions heard and respected - for example more than 400 children participated in the preparation of the report for the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. The Child Rights Centre has contributed to the improvement of the child protection system in Serbia through the following activities and initiatives:
    • fostering children’s participation in reporting on the exercise of the child rights in Serbia, to UN treaty bodies and European institutions
    • creation of “child friendly“ publication – written in the language understandable to children
    • involvement in the consultation process for development of the EU Strategy on the rights of the child
    • preparing reports on the implementation of the Lanzarote Convention in Serbia sent to the Council of Europe‘s Lanzarote Committee
    • implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child sent to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child
    • consultation processes for developing the Strategy for prevention and protection of children from violence in Serbia
    • consultation on Draft Law on the Rights of the Child and Children’s Ombudsman
Through various projects focused on education on the rights of the child, prevention of violence, human trafficking, discrimination, and working with children from vulnerable groups included in school system (including Roma children, children with disabilities, children refugees, children in alternative care) the Child Rights Centre has a lot of relevant experience and has widely contributed to better protection of children from violence.
